CBD and Arthritis

What is CBD?

CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, but it does not give you the high associated with marijuana. Cannabis contains a variety of over one hundred chemical components known as cannabinoids, and CBD is one of them.

How CBD Fights Inflammation

CBD does not get you high; the cannabinoid responsible for that is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Instead, it interacts with a series of receptors throughout your body which make out the endocannabinoid system. This system helps maintain balance in the body, and will work harder when an external factor, like stress, threatens the balance.

But when CBD enters the body, it assists the endocannabinoid system with functions that reduce the sensation of pain and bring down inflammation. CBD’s adeptness of bringing down inflammation and swelling mark it as a promising treatment for arthritic pain.

While research on CBD as a pain treatment is well in its infancy yet, promising studies such as this 2017 trial showed that CBD could be a safe, useful therapeutic for osteoarthritis.

Another study demonstrated that CBD is effective for treating local areas through topical application, meaning that a CBD cream may be most suitable for arthritis patients.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD is legal in most states, aside from Idaho, South Dakota and Nebraska. While there’s a good chance that CBD is legal in your state, the fact that it’s not legal on the federal level means that it’s not federally regulated.

The term “arthritis” refers to a series of over a hundred different conditions related to joint disease. Symptoms of arthritis include swelling, limited range of motion, and severe chronic pain.

Over fifty million Americans experience a form of arthritis, and the condition makes even the most mundane tasks, like climbing the stairs of driving, a grueling ordeal.

Since arthritis is a condition that rarely recedes after its initial appearances, many patients turn to sustainable, holistic ways to ease their symptoms, like hot and cold therapy, acupuncture, healthy diets with a lot of fatty acids, and in recent years, the use of cannabidiol, or CBD.

product is entirely up to the company producing it, so you’ll have to keep an eye out for trustworthy brands. These brands will offer a certificate of analysis provided by a third-party lab, and will list the exact amount of CBD on the label.

How to Use CBD as an Arthritis Treatment

While a topical treatment such as an ointment or body lotion is recommended for specific areas with inflammation, the way in which you apply your CBD is entirely up to you.

If you do opt for the topical treatment, start with a product containing a small dose, at 5-10 mg twice a day. Over time, you may increase this dose to a range of 50-100 mg twice daily.

If you decide to use an orally ingested CBD product, like capsules, gummies, or CBD-infused honey, see “How to take CBD for pain.”

While CBD is a possible treatment for all varieties of chronic pain, the most promising research has been related to arthritis. If you are seeking relief from the inflammation, swelling, and immobility that arthritis inflicts, CBD, whether taken as a softgel or applied as a cream, maybe the most suitable option.
